The Ark

This is written by us, informed by our experience in conjunction with  feedback from clients and mentors, with the intention of sharing our creative journey and physical experience with you, the reader.

The Ark has come to be known as our signature piece of work. Recognised for its organic Y-branch structural supports and its warm and welcoming character, the Ark is a beautiful installation and reflection of imaginative, collaborative and nurturing public infrastructure.

Its primary function was to reclaim unused space, in the form of 12 parking spaces, at a time where human footfall had been localised due to the public health issue of COVID-19 which also created a social dilemma around transport and business.

The parking spaces were massively under-utilised due to car travel being restricted, and so were transformed into a shelter that could facilitate social distancing, allowing local business access to increased outdoor seating for patrons. As part of our co-design and co-creation process, businesses were approached prior to construction and feedback was sought on what kind of space they would like to see and why. The overarching sentiment for most of these small businesses, typically hospitality establishments, was an outdoor space where people could enjoy their products and services safely

The Ark satisfied this need by offering comfortable shelter from the elements, as well as a beautiful outdoor space creating a safe environment for socialising.

See our video above to get a more detailed understanding of how this project unfolded.
